Toronto's professional women's hockey team is bringing their game back to one of the sport's biggest stages later this month.
The Toronto Sceptres and the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) recently announced the team's Jan. 25 game against the New York Sirens will be played at Scotiabank Arena, the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The announcement was made in association with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.
Last season, the Sceptres — known then as simply PWHL Toronto — played to a sold-out crowd of 19,285 fans against Montreal, skating to a 3-0 win. The game set the all-time attendance record for a professional women’s hockey game, until that record was broken later that season in Montreal later as Toronto visited the Bell Centre.
“In the inaugural season of the PWHL, we saw our city show up for us time and time again," Sceptres captain Blayre Turnbull said in a statement. "We sold out every home game, including selling out our game at Scotiabank Arena in less than a day."
“We cannot wait to return to Scotiabank Arena! Having the chance to play at Toronto’s iconic venue again is very exciting and an incredible experience to share with the newest members of our team," Turnbull said.
It's been a busy week for the team both on and off the ice.
On Monday, Toronto traded alternate captain Jocelyne Larocque and forward Victoria Bach to Ottawa for defender Savannah Harmon and forward Hayley Scamurra.
Ahead of the trade, Torontonian and Grey’s Anatomy star Caterina Scorsone (who plays Dr. Amelia Shepherd on the TV medical drama) and E.R. Fightmaster (who plays Dr. Kai) attended the team's Community Heroes game on Friday.
"It was an incredible moment as we also had the opportunity to celebrate Caterina’s work with the Global Down Syndrome Foundation, where she shines as a true local hero!" the team said in a social media post.
