Toronto police reported an elderly man has passed away after falling through the ice into the lake near the Toronto Islands

In a post on X, Toronto Police Operations said the man was found near Lagoon Road and Centre Island Parkway on Centre Island at 9 a.m. Friday.

The man was in his 70s, police said.

A spokesperson for Toronto Fire told TorontoToday the department and Toronto Police were involved in a search effort for the man Thursday night.

Toronto Police posted a video on the dangers of walking or skating on ice. Experts also warn that Toronto's inner harbour is not a safe place to skate.

"Every winter, all across Ontario, including Toronto, people fall through the ice that they thought was safe to be on," said an officer in the video. "In big city areas, there's a lot going on under the ice that can make it weaker than it appears to be."
